The Trafford centre, Manchester’s £1.6 billion shopping and leisure destination, has recently installed 71 variable speed drives on its cooling fans, extractors and fountain pumps. Andy Robinson building services manager at The Trafford centre, piloted this mammoth project, which upon completion will deliver significant benefits and improved energy efficiency.

Dowding and Mills the UK’s largest provider of engineering solutions won the pitch for its knowledge and experience of energy saving projects, as well as sole responsibility for supply, installation and commissioning. The total price of the scheme was £117K and was successfully completed in 5 weeks in December 2006. Now in full swing, the considerable reduction in energy consumption has resulted in a saving of approx £95K over the course of just 3 months.
